Enterprise Social Media

I remember when my standalone PC was not connected to any other device and was very lonely. I was the one filling the gap in that network by copying file on floppy and physically carrying it to a place where it was printed or used in some way. It is clear that even something as wonderful as a Personal Computer cannot be totally utilized if it is not connected to other devices. The same applies to people. As technology evolves further. This connectivity is seen in the huge social networking explosion on the internet. Everybody, who is anybody, is on Facebook, Twitter, Orkut and numerous other such sites. Businesses are also realizing the effectiveness of social networking and are quickly latching on to it.

Facebook alone has more than 500 million active users and counting. I met a person last week at a party who gets up 3 times during the night to check status updates on facebook. With this kind of acceptance of social networking in our Personal daily lives, enterprises are not far behind. They are utilizing social networking tools as well.

Deploying of social media for the benefit of an enterprise can be termed as Enterprise Social Media. For enterprises, it entails connecting employees within the enterprise or connecting customer and vendors to their employees. Social networking of employees, customers, and vendors, and the sharing of business-related content among them could lead to increased productivity and visibility.

Several vendors in the marketplace offer collaboration and social media technology for enterprises but the real benefits of social media in the corporate world have yet to be realized. Some enterprises have been slow in adopting social media. Some larger companies with bigger budgets have tested the waters. In my opinion, however the real benefactors of enterprise social technology will be small and medium-size businesses (SMB). SMBs are small and agile. Their load is small, hence their adaptation cycles are shorter. They will gain visibility in a shorter time. And, as the cost of implementation is relatively low for them, it is easy for them to overcome the entry barrier.

Namo Solutions' Test Project in enterprise social media has now completed 5 years, and the results have been staggering. We are very excited to roll out these products in the coming quarter.
